Best Infrared Sauna Reviews

Saunas – rooms with heat sources used for sweating. Well, they are not just that, they are well known for the health benefits and relaxation they offer. They are not a new thing; in fact, they are quite ancient. The concept existed in different forms in various cultures around the world long ago. Public bathhouses often offer saunas and they are becoming very popular at home too. There are various types of saunas available in the market now, with varying styles. Fundamentally, all the best infrared saunas work the same way. Depending on your preference, circumstances or budget one style might be better for you than other ones.

An infrared sauna is quite special because it uses infrared heaters, which give off infrared waves, generating heat. The infrared sauna can be more convenient than traditional ones, and it has some added health benefits due to the infrared waves. The infrared waves can penetrate your skin and heat it up directly, without the need to heat the air. That makes the room temperature lower than traditional sauna.

Because infrared saunas do not heat up the surroundings, they are the ideal solution for home. If you are specifically buying sauna to set it up at home, infrared saunas are the best you will get. They won’t damage the furniture with heat or produce fumes. It is also quite eco-friendly and ergonomic, with little danger factor for it. If you use it carefully, you are sure to be satisfied with what you get.

Benefits of an Infrared Sauna

Best Infrared Sauna

Infrared Saunas are known for their immense health benefits. They have been historically used for medical and healing purposes. The sweating that happens inside a sauna can burn off calories and remove unwanted toxins. People can sweat through cardiovascular exercise or other type of work, but for those who can’t do that, saunas are a great tool to relax and burn calories at the same time. But there are other health benefits that comes with infrared saunas specifically, that makes them so interesting. Here are some of those benefits of infrared saunas.

Increased Metabolism

Infrared saunas can increase your metabolism similar to moderate intensity cardio, without the need to do moderate intensity work. Your heart rate goes up high inside infrared sauna, and burns many calories during the sauna session.

Detoxification

Our bodies can carry a lot of pollutants and harmful toxins, due to bad dietary choices and bad environment. Heavy metal toxins like mercury and lead can be very harmful for our body. While our body is very good at fighting and cleaning these toxin itself, infrared saunas can boost that ability and it can clean much more toxins in a short amount of time.

Skin Revitalization and Anti-Aging

Regular sauna use is said to make the skin revitalized and refreshed by increasing collagen and elastin production. It can also optimize our ‘biological age’ and give us a more younger look.

Relaxation

Infrared saunas help you to relax more through the balancing of cortisol, the hormone primarily responsible for your stress. Thus it works as a wonderful relaxation and stress reduction tool. It also relaxes muscle tension and can sooth your mind as well.

Improved Blood Circulation

Exposure to infrared waves can improve your blood flow, improve muscle recovery and decrease healing time. It also reduces pain and inflammation. Infrared saunas can be great tool to improve your circulation and improve your overall health.

Weight loss

The heat from infrared saunas increases your core temperature and heart rate, thus burning more calories. This will boost your weight loss, and also reduce the chance of excess weight and obesity related health problems. A 30-minute sauna session can burn almost 600 calories.

Infrared Sauna Benefits and Disadvantages

Sauna candlesMost of the usual informative articles we have seen about infrared saunas will only cite the benefits of infrared saunas. But there are some disadvantages of infrared saunas, that are mostly avoidable or manageable, so as a customer, you should be privy to them, as much as you are to the benefits. You can also prevent any unwanted dangers by knowing about these dangers. So here are some of the potential disadvantages that can happen with infrared saunas.

Possibilities of Overheating

The infrared saunas release infrared lights, which filters out the harmful ultraviolet rays and keeps the heat level at check. Infrared saunas do not get as hot as traditional saunas. They mostly reach 100 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit as opposed to the 140-180 degrees Fahrenheit of traditional saunas. But even with the lower heat, sitting for too long inside the sauna can cause your body to overheat. This can happen when saunas are used carelessly. 10-20 minutes of sauna sessions will usually be enough (Source: Harvard Medical School).

Dehydration

The main function of a sauna is to make people sweat. They remove toxins from the body through the sweating. But since it forces you to sweat a lot in such a short time, it can easily lead to dehydration. Again, the chance of this can be minimized through diligence from the user’s part. An infrared sauna user should drink a lot of water and avoid alcohol, or soft drinks before entering saunas. Older people should also use saunas for less time than younger people, since they have increased chance of dehydration.

Mobilization of Toxins

While infrared saunas are excellent tool for detoxing the body, it can also cause the toxins to mobilize erratically. Meaning, moving the toxins from one part of your body to another, and in the bad cases moving to anywhere dangerous. If your body has residue from medication or other drug use, saunas can make them release into your system and cause problems. You should take extra care for this to not happen.

Aggravate Existing Health Conditions

If you have any preexisting health conditions, you should always ask your doctors, before using an infrared sauna. They can cause adverse effects on some illnesses and conditions, such as joint injuries, heart conditions or high blood pressure etc. People who use pacemakers or implants should always consult a doctor before using saunas.

Infrared Sauna Dangers

There can be some danger with Infrared saunas, since they are a device, some technical problems and bad cases can happen. But the technology these days to prevent any unwanted dangers are superior and companies are constantly striving to give you the safest products possible. But as a buyer and a user some responsibility to know about the safe and the unsafe side of the product lies on you, and it also makes you more prepared. Most of these dangers are avoidable with careful supervision and usage.

Medical Conditions

Those with the following medical condition are in increased danger from infrared saunas. They should refrain from using saunas completely unless the doctor says otherwise.

Stroke, myocardial infection or heart attack, aortic stenosis, unstable angina pectoris, interference in blood circulation, brain tumors and multiple sclerosis. If you have a history of these it’s best to avoid saunas completely. These can cause to resurface and worst cases can be deadly.

Implants

If you have a silicone implant, or other type of devices such as pacemaker, pin and rod or cochlear devices in your body, they can malfunction or overheat. This is seriously dangerous for your body, and unless your doctor absolutely assures you, refrain from using saunas at all.

Risky for the Chemically Sensitive

Some people are more chemically sensitive than others. The toxin release can have a very dangerous effect in their body. And since the infrared sauna boosts the process, they are far more dangerous for the chemically sensitive people. If you choose to detox, you should do it under expert supervision for the first time, and medically check if you have sensitivity to any specific chemicals.

Benefits of Infrared Light

Infrared light therapy is growing in popularity fast, because of how beneficial they are to the health and their positive effect on a lot of serious medical condition, and prevention qualities that a lot of scientists claim they have.

Infrared light is one of the most resonant frequencies of light in nature. We know that, light is made up of several frequencies, which are separated in different colors of bands, as we see it. The frequency of infrared light is a bit below the visible spectrum, so the naked eye can’t see it. In infrared therapy, they are used for healing the body on a cellular level.

The usual great source for infrared light is, quite obviously, THE SUN! That’s why doctors and dietitians emphasize going out and exposure to the sun so much for health purposes. But for a lot of busy people, getting daily exposure to the sun for prolonged time isn’t possible. That’s where manual infrared light therapy comes in. It can give the same benefits in under just a few minutes daily.

The Benefits

Infrared lights are said to have the potential to fight cancer. Due to the properties of infrared lights and the chemical reaction our body has to them, regular sessions of infrared light can reduce the chance of cancer significantly.

Muscle pain and mitochondrial diseases are also addressable. Since the body absorbs the infrared lights on a cellular level, it can prevent muscle conditions of the body while being totally noninvasive unlike medication and other methods.

It produces Nitric Oxide in the body. Infrared lights are shown to produce of spike the production of nitric oxide, a highly beneficial component, in our bodies. Patients with the risk of heart attack are the most benefitted from this. Even athletes who are looking to boost their physical performances can be helped with infrared therapy induced nitric oxide production.

All in all, benefits of infrared lights are immense and currently it’s one of the most non-invasive and fun type of therapy out there. If you are looking for effective alternative treatment to your problems or just generally trying to improve your health, infrared therapy can help you with all.

Infrared Sauna vs Steam Sauna

Steam Sauna

Steam Sauna

While reading about infrared saunas, one of the questions that might arise in your mind is, why should you use an infrared sauna as opposed to a traditional steam sauna? What are the differences between these two that will be relevant to my case? These are all quite logical questions and we should address them accordingly. There are a lot of factors at work here, which makes the infrared sauna and steam sauna vastly different than each other.

Steam Sauna

First let’s get to know the traditional steam saunas briefly. They are rooms built with non-porous materials like glass or tile with airtight construction. That’s why it’s also called a steam room. It produces heat and humidity by boiling water and producing steam. The steam creates a moisture rich environment that forces you to sweat. Steam rooms, unlike infrared saunas, heat the outside environment; it warms the user with the outside heat.

Differences from Infrared Saunas

Steam room creates a highly humid and hot environment, as opposed to heating up the user directly on a cellular level. Thus some of the health effects and benefits are quite different from each other. Steam saunas can help with respiratory reliefs and give comfort from issues such as allergies and sinus problems. The moisture in the air can open the nasal passages, allowing clear breathing. It can also improve the hydration of the skin from the steam produced by the water, and also help get better sleep.

Different Facts of Buying the Two Types of Saunas

Steam saunas and infrared saunas can both be bought as kits, for home usage. They can also be custom made. It is easy to install it at home, but you should hire a contractor for that. Steam rooms as opposed to infrared saunas require particular plumbing, and electricity. You might also need to buy a steam generator separately and install it safely, which can cost you a lot of unnecessary bucks and time. You also need an airtight place in your home with sloped ceilings with drainage system to install steam saunas. They also need constant cleaning to prevent bacterial growth in the moist environment. Infrared saunas are much more hassle free in that regard.

Sauna vs Hot Tub

Sauna vs Hot tub

Should you get a sauna or a hot tub? With only so much room in your house and budget, you can only have one or the other. You have to decide based on the benefits they provide. There are also the cost factor: the price of the unit and the maintenance and installation cost.

Both the sauna and the hot tub are great ways to relax and unwind. They soothe sore muscles and relieves stress. Although some claim they help you lose weight, there are studies that show it’s false. The temporary weight loss is due to the dehydration while in the sauna or the hot tub (livestrong.com).

Immersing in a hot tub or sitting in a sauna before going to bed, will help you sleep better. The heat in the sauna or the hot tub will increase your body temperature. When you go to sleep after a bath in the hot tub, your body cools faster because of the temperature difference. Because of this, you get deep, long sleep. Read more about Hot Tub Hydrotherapy – Health and Wellness for You.

Health Benefits

In terms of health and personal well-being benefits, there are two factors where hot tubs have upper hand over saunas. It’s the buoyancy and the massage.

Massage – Hot tubs come with air and bubble jets that massage different parts of the body while you are immersed in the hot water. This definitely relieves and eases sore muscles.

Buoyancy – The buoyancy helps reduce pressure on the joints exerted by gravity. The weightless feeling is especially useful if you have a bad backs or pain in your joints.

Other Benefits

The other factors to consider are installation, cost and maintenance.

Installation

Installation of a hot tub is much easier than installing a sauna. Just find a level and secure surface in your house and install the tub there. All you need is an electrical source and a water source.

Sauna takes up more space and there are more parts to assemble. Most of the time a professional will be required to install it. Infrared saunas are easier to install than steam saunas. In either case, an electrician will be required to wire the light, light switch, and the sauna heater controls.

Cost

A sauna cost less than a hot tub. But the installation cost of a sauna is more that of than a hot tub. The total price and the installation cost is more for a sauna than a similar capacity hot tub.

Maintenance

Maintaining a hot tub is more difficult that maintaining an infrared sauna. The water chemistry must be maintained, filters needs to be cleaned regularly or replaced. Water needs to be drained every two to four months. There are so much more cleaning to be done with the hot tub than a sauna.
